Poor Susan
When Susan Boyle took to the stage of Britain’s Got Talent, the whole nation laughed its collective head off. I remember it like it was only yesterday (and indeed, it wasn’t that long ago, only a couple of years if my memory serves me correctly); this bedraggled (some might say Hagged, but you didn’t hear it from me) woman with dodgy hair who was a bit overweight (also wearing terrible clothes but let’s stop the insults there) coming on and laughing and joking with Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden and then going on to blow us all away with her rendition of I dreamed a dream, or whatever it was. And it didn’t stop there, of course: Susan went on to out-sell Elton John and even Lady Gaga!
But hang on a minute, as amazing as Susan’s story is and was, do we really need to hear it on national TV? Some might say that her interview with Piers Morgan last night was fascinating; I on the other hand have a very different opinion: to my mind it was actually quite dull, lacking much of anything, and didn’t really deserve so much air time. I have nothing against Susan Boyle, please don’t get me wrong, but what I would say is this: she has led the life of an ordinary woman, so why try and put her on the box in a prime entertainment slot and make out she is something that she’s not?
To take limited edition sculptures as an analogy, why take one of them and keep sticking it in everyone’s face when it’s not actually all that interesting? Surely it’s better to leave it on the shelf and let it sell quietly than it is stick it at the front of house and risk it selling out too quickly?
It remains to be seen what will become of Susan Boyle, but one thing about her definitely impressed me: she hasn’t been spending all of her fortune, which is good for her, because from the looks of her dropping record sales she is going to need it…
