Differing Opinions

The fact that more people are reading now than ever before, and there are all these new genres of books – when I say new genres, I mean more variety of sub-divisions of books, I suppose – around absolutely thrills me. I love that people are reading (except the guy who is always reading at my local computer shop, apple mac repair london , which means he’s been late every time I’ve left my computer there for him to fix…). But there is one enemy of reading and one that far too many people are guilty of being best friends with: the enemy which is reading the same author again and again.

I have no problem with people reading a few books from one author, but I’ve never been able to get my head around why some people choose to read ONLY one or two authors for their entire lives. My dad, I hate to say it, is a prime example of this kind of narrow-minded book reading person. He reads either Wilbur Smith or Ken Follet (if that’s how you spell it). Now, both these authors are obviously great and much-loved, but you have to ask: why not read some Robert Ludlum too? Even just for a change?

I suppose it comes down to what people feel comfortable in. It’s not dissimilar to always wearing the same clothes or never daring to venture to another pub but the local one. And there is the argument, of course, that it’s none of my business what people read, and that is valid too, of course. But let’s just say this: the more different types of text that people read, the greater their capacity to see a number of different truths. In my opinion this is what makes civilization so versatile, and books allow us to see so many different opinions, so why limit yourself to just a paltry one or two?
