The Big Secret

Until recently I was convinced that my grandparents still existed back in the pre-war, pre-computer days, but a recent visit to their spare room (after I was partially disgusted at the site of my gran’s teeth in the sink) unveiled a completely new side – dimension, even – to the elders I thought I knew and loved.

Yes, gran (I suspected it was her idea because she was always a bit secretive like that) knew more than she let on about the internet.

In the room, I discovered as the door creaked slowly open, was a desk and a computer that looked brand-new. Next to it were books called things like HOW TO USE THE INTERNET FOR GRANNIES and the like. Thus it was proven. This was when she appeared behind me: “you’ve found me out, then,” she said, “my secret has been discovered!”

“Yes,” I said drinking out of one of her pantone espresso cups, “I suppose I have. Honestly gran, I had no idea.”

She then invited me to sit next to her at the computer, and proceeded to give me a masterclass in basic computer stuff; one that left no virtual stone unturned. Indeed, my gran was one seriously dark horse, and we spent the rest of the afternoon perusing websites, with her showing me how she could buy things using her argos.co.uk discount codes and such. It was an enlightening experience, made even more unbelievable when granddad came doddering up the stairs, sat down and started playing Space Invaders (and soon me and him were locked in a fierce battle which saw granddad eventually beat me by three hundred points).

Unbelievable, that’s all I have to say about it. So next time you go round your grandparents, watch out, because what you see on the surface may only be a lie.
