Making New
If you’re born human in the western world where material things are of utmost importance, getting Christmas presents that you despise is just something that you have to live with. It happens to all of us, and no matter how many hints you give your grandparents, the fact that they often don’t understand technology and generally resent any kind of change means that you are powerless to solve the problem. Which is why, if, like me, you get rubbish useless presents every year, you really need to find a way of looking at things from a different perspective.
My solution to this is quite simple. It is also amazingly effective, and anybody can do the same, whether they are into cyber-art of regular art or whatever. Take the Pantone Mini Mugs that I received this Christmas 2010, for example. Never gonna use them. Don’t even know what they are. Have no idea what in the world possessed my grandparents to pick these things up and think “yes, this is perfect!”. But there you have it, it’s happened, bless ’em, so deal with it. So what did I do? Well, I decided to smash them to pieces under a towel is what. Then I stuck all the bits onto a rubber mat, creating an amazingly personalized mouse-mat for a good friend of mine who really appreciates hand made gifts! Honestly, I’m telling you, it doesn’t matter what your friends love or are into, you can nearly always smash a rubbish present up and make a great custom gift out of it. The best thing is there is no guilt to be had: after all, you’ve taken something worthless and converted it into something that will be forever cherished. If that isn’t in the spirit of Christmas and baby Jesus then I don’t know what is!
